Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and this program helps you understand it from the ground up. You will leave with real relationships, sharper critical thinking, and a clearer sense of how you want to show up for your community.
The Center for Civic Leadership (CCL) at Rice University fosters engaged citizenship through integrated curricular and experiential learning opportunities. It cultivates mutually beneficial university-community partnerships that promote positive, sustainable change in Houston, across the United States, and around the world. The CCL offers community-focused programs such as mentorship experiences, alternative spring break trips, policy challenges, action research teams, and civic immersion programs. It partners with over 250 organizations globally — two-thirds of them in Houston — working on issues including education, housing, public health, criminal justice, immigration, racial justice, and more. The center also offers courses and a Certificate in Civic Leadership to help Rice students develop skills for civic engagement and social change.
