A new law requires officials to study living conditions and safety in the Harris County jail.

Learn More
House Bill 303 is a new law that orders a study of the Harris County jail. The study will look at how people live there and whether they are safe. This bill gives our community a chance to understand what happens inside the jail and what changes may be needed. The Commission on Jail Standards will lead this study. They are the state agency responsible for setting and checking jail standards across Texas. They will examine living conditions and safety for all people held in the Harris County jail. The commission must finish the study and write a report by December 1, 2026. The report will go to the Texas Legislature. It will include findings about the jail and suggestions for how to make it better. These recommendations could lead to new rules or laws that improve safety and conditions for people in jail. This bill gives us a way to make sure jails are run fairly and safely. By studying the Harris County jail, we can learn what is working well and what needs to change. The report will be public, so our community can read what the commission found and what they recommend. This is an important step toward making sure all people in our jails are treated with dignity and safety.
