"Refugees have fled political, social, or religious persecution. When they arrive, they need more than just a roof — they need a community. IM Houston has been doing this work for over 30 years, serving families from more than 40 countries. Your time or donation can help a family find their footing in a new city."
IM Houston's Refugee Services resettles legal refugees in Greater Houston. Working with the U.S. State Department and Episcopal Migration Ministries, the program provides housing, case management, job placement, English classes, cultural orientation, and legal services. Over 80% of clients become self-sufficient within six to twelve months. Donations of money or household items help furnish apartments. Volunteers must be 21 and can mentor families, practice English, or help with transportation. Email volunteerinfo@imgh.org to get involved.
IM Houston (Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston) runs a Refugee Services program that resettles legal refugees who have fled political, social, or religious persecution. The program works in partnership with the U.S. State Department and Episcopal Migration Ministries to welcome newly arrived families and connect them with housing, employment, English language instruction, cultural orientation, and DOJ-accredited legal services on the path to U.S. citizenship. Over 80% of clients become self-sufficient within six to twelve months of arrival, and the program has served refugees from more than 40 countries over the past 30 years.
Most refugees are resettled in the southwest area of Houston, and volunteer activities take place either at a refugee's home or at IM Houston's headquarters at 3303 Main Street, Houston, TX 77002. Volunteer roles include serving as a cultural mentor — helping families explore the city, practice English, or navigate public transportation. Individual volunteers must be at least 21 years old and complete an orientation and interview before placement; some opportunities welcome family participation.
Financial donations and household items from IM Houston's Amazon wish list help furnish apartments for newly arrived families and cover essential needs like kitchenware, hygiene products, and bedding. To support Refugee Services by text, send IMRS to 53-555. For more information on volunteering, email volunteerinfo@imgh.org, or visit imgh.org/imhouston-refugees/ to donate or learn more.
