Hey, did you know the buses in Harris County have images of civil rights heroes on them? It's called Moving Monuments. Look for them next time you're out!
Moving Monuments is a free public art project from Harris County Precinct One. It places large images of social justice heroes on buses that travel through Precinct One. As the buses move through Houston neighborhoods, they carry stories of people who fought for equality, civil rights, and justice — and invite you to carry that work forward.
Each bus wrap features a different social justice hero or Houston icon. The lineup includes figures like Harriet Tubman, Mickey Leland, Rev. Bill Lawson, Ann Richards, Abraham Lincoln, Major Taylor, and more. Some wraps connect to current issues — voter suppression, environmental justice, and the mass incarceration of communities of color. A Houston-pride bus also honors local legends like artist John Biggers, state Rep. Barbara Jordan, and Archie Bell and the Drells, along with beloved places like the El Dorado Ballroom and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
You don't need to do anything special to experience Moving Monuments. If you ride or spot a Precinct One bus, you may see one of these heroes looking back at you. Let that be a starting point — learn more about the person featured, talk about their story with a neighbor or young person, or think about one local issue where you can take action. The project is free and happens in public space, so everyone is welcome.

Harris County Precinct One, Houston
This project connects to broader conversations happening in Houston about environmental justice, voter access, and how public spaces reflect community values. Precinct One also offers a Transportation Program for groups that need transit support.
Buses have a deep history in the civil rights movement — from Rosa Parks to the Freedom Riders. This project honors that legacy by turning everyday transit into a moving gallery. The heroes featured, including Barbara Jordan, Frederick Douglass, Dolores Huerta, and John Biggers, broke real barriers. Seeing their stories on the streets is a reminder that the fight for equality, environmental justice, and voter rights is still alive today.
