The Houston Peace & Justice Center (HPJC) is a community action hub working to build a more peaceful and fair Greater Houston. It offers peace education, activism training, and tools that help individuals, families, and organizations work together toward a just, nonviolent world.
HPJC does several things at once. It trains people in activism and nonviolent conflict resolution. It runs peace education programs for children and adults, and works to bring that education into local school curricula. It helps organizations collaborate and build coalitions around shared goals. It connects advocates with elected officials at the local, state, and national levels. It also works to make sure students have accurate information about both military and nonmilitary options after graduation. Longer term, HPJC envisions a physical hub with office space, meeting rooms, a resource library, and space for cultural events — a place where training, organizing, and community life all happen under one roof.
You can use what HPJC offers in a few practical ways. If you want to get more involved in a cause, their activism training can help you build skills and find others who share your values. If you lead or belong to a faith community, neighborhood group, or nonprofit, HPJC's networking tools can help your group find allies and take on bigger goals together. It models its collaborative approach on networks like Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston, which helps faith communities fulfill their social service mission. HPJC also connects local work to regional and national campaigns, including state legislative advocacy and efforts to influence corporate behavior.
Houston is a global city. What happens here — in our schools, houses of worship, neighborhoods, and city hall — connects to larger questions about fairness, safety, and human rights. HPJC believes that people and organizations working together are more powerful than anyone acting alone. Its goal is to be the connective tissue that links Houston's peace and justice community into something bigger than the sum of its parts.
