Commissioner Lesley Briones Announces Release of Harris County LGBTQIA+ Commission’s Inaugural Report

Harris County's LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual/Aromantic) Commission has released its first-ever report. It captures what Harris County residents said they need — and maps out concrete steps the county can take to help.

The Commission — established in June 2023 under Commissioner Lesley Briones — held a series of community listening sessions and turned what they heard into findings and recommendations. Key proposals include: launching a quality-of-life survey to better collect data on LGBTQIA+ residents; advising the Harris County Sheriff's Office and other departments on inclusive policies; adding regular cultural competency training for county law enforcement; building a pipeline of LGBTQIA+ residents for county boards and commissions; and expanding LGBTQIA+ educational resources at county community centers. A large-scale town hall and new health initiatives are also planned.
