Courts are required by law to make sure people who face criminal charges are mentally able to participate in their own defense. They also sometimes need to know a person's mental state at the time of an alleged crime. The Harris Center provides those professional evaluations.
Renewing this contract keeps that service running without interruption for another year.
This is a one-year renewal of an existing agreement between Harris County and The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD. It covers competency and sanity evaluation services for the Administrative Office of the District Courts from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. The total cost is $3,402,477.
Because this is a cooperative interlocal agreement between government agencies, it is exempt from the county's Minority and Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) participation goal.
