Harris County Commissioners Court is reviewing an agreement that would let Church World Service (CWS) Houston run free refugee health promotion programs at Burnett Bayland Community Center in the Gulfton neighborhood, at no cost to the county. CWS Houston is a nonprofit that helps refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants with mental health support, legal services, and healthcare navigation. The item was introduced June 26, 2026, and is scheduled for action at the July 9, 2026 Commissioners Court meeting.
A nonprofit would use space at a county community center in Gulfton to run health programs for refugees. Neighbors who use Burnett Bayland Community Center may see new programs or visitors at the facility.
