Alief Evacuation Routes Get $7.5 Million Safety Upgrade

Harris County Commissioners Court approved a major safety project for Alief neighborhoods. The county will spend $7.5 million in federal disaster recovery funds to improve traffic signals along evacuation routes in the Alief area. This project helps families get out safely during hurricanes and other emergencies. The money comes from Community Development Block Grant Mitigation funds - federal dollars specifically for disaster preparation after Hurricane Harvey. Better traffic signals mean faster, safer evacuations when we need to leave quickly. The signals will be designed to handle heavy traffic during emergencies and work even when power goes out. Alief sits in southwest Harris County, an area that floods during major storms. Many families here struggled to evacuate during Hurricane Harvey because traffic lights failed and roads backed up for hours. This upgrade directly addresses that problem. The project passed Commissioners Court in May 2026, meaning work will start soon. Harris County Precinct 4 will manage the construction and installation.
