Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board meetings are where real decisions get made — budgets, school boundaries, teacher pay, and programs that touch your child every day. These monthly public meetings are open to everyone, and you have a real chance to speak directly to the people in charge. Here is what you need to know before you walk through the door.
Each meeting follows a set agenda. You can expect a superintendent's report on district operations, updates on academic programs and school performance, budget and finance decisions, facilities news like construction or school boundary changes, and personnel matters. The final section — public comment — is your time. You get two to three minutes to address board members on any topic. Note: As of 2026, HISD is under Texas Education Agency (TEA) appointed management. The Board of Managers runs public meetings in the same way an elected board would. Check houstonisd.org for the current governance status.
Start by finding the agenda at houstonisd.legistar.com — it is posted several days before the meeting and includes detailed backup documents worth reading. Register for public comment using the eComment system on Legistar before the meeting. When you arrive, check in with staff at the auditorium entrance. When it is your turn to speak, state your name, your connection to HISD (parent, student, teacher, or taxpayer), and your specific topic. Mention your child's school by name if it is relevant — that local detail helps the board understand the real impact. The board may not respond right away, but your comments become part of the permanent public record. After the meeting, videos and minutes are posted at houstonisd.legistar.com so you can follow up on anything that was decided.
Second Thursday of each month at 5:00 PM, except July. Meetings typically run two to four hours.
Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, Board Auditorium, 4400 West 18th Street, Houston. Free on-site parking is available. The auditorium is ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible. Meetings are also livestreamed and archived on the HISD website for those who cannot attend in person.
If you need help getting there by bus, METRO routes serve the area around the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center — plan your trip at ridemetro.org. If you need accessibility accommodations, contact the HISD Board Office in advance of the meeting.
HISD serves 187,000 students — the largest school district in Texas. The board votes on things that shape your child's daily life: classroom resources, school safety, special programs, and which campuses get new funding. Public comment puts your voice directly into the official record. When parents show up consistently, board members take notice.
