What are Houston Super Neighborhoods?

Houston is divided into 88 super neighborhoods — grassroots organizations made up of residents, businesses, and churches. They act as a two-way bridge between everyday Houstonians and city and county government. If you live in Houston, one of these groups already represents your area.

Each of Houston's 88 super neighborhoods is led by an elected president and a council of community members. They gather information from city and county agencies and pass it on to residents. They also collect feedback and concerns from residents and bring those back to officials. There is no single playbook — each group tackles whatever issues come up in its area. Past wins include rerouting transit plans, cleaning up hike-and-bike trails, and addressing neighborhood safety concerns.

Start by finding out which of the 88 super neighborhoods covers your address. Then look up who your super neighborhood president is and when the group meets. Attending even one meeting can show you what issues your neighbors care about — and give you a chance to raise your own. If civic leadership interests you, super neighborhood councils hold elections and welcome new participants. Programs like the Complete Communities University (CCU), run through the City of Houston, can also help you build skills for this kind of work.

Super neighborhoods work closely with Houston City Council members and county officials. They also coordinate with city agencies and transit providers like METRO. Civic clubs, neighborhood associations, churches, and local businesses often participate alongside super neighborhood councils.

Big cities can feel hard to navigate. Super neighborhoods exist to fix that. Former Mayor Lee Brown launched the program in 1999 because Houston had grown so large that individual residents struggled to reach city officials with concerns. These groups give neighbors a real seat at the table — whether the issue is a rerouted bus line, a crime hot spot, or a trail that needs cleaning up.
