Understanding Hunger More than one million people within Houston Food Bank’s service area are considered food insecure, meaning they do not have reliable access to nutritious food to fuel a healthy lifestyle. Life’s unexpected challenges—such as job loss, medical emergencies, or rising cost of living—can quickly leave hardworking families and individuals in need of help. But there is hope! Thanks to our network of community partners, generous donors, and dedicated volunteers, we are providing food and hope to our neighbors facing hunger in southeast Texas. Houston Food Bank’s mission is to provide food for better lives for our neighbors in southeast Texas. We distribute millions of pounds of nutritious food and other essentials through a network of more than 1,600 community partners in our 18 county service area. We offer programs and services aimed at helping families achieve long-term stability including nutrition education, health management, and help in securing state-funded assistance.
