"Kids learn best when they can touch, observe, and ask questions outside the classroom. These programs connect Harris County youth — especially those in low- to moderate-income neighborhoods — to the plants, animals, and wild spaces of the Texas Gulf Coast. Building that connection early helps children grow into adults who care for the natural world around them."

Alexander Deussen and El Franco Lee Learning Centers, plus schools and recreation centers across Harris County Precinct 1
Harris County Precinct 1 has run outdoor science programs for local kids for more than 25 years. From summer camps to school visits with live animals, these free or low-cost programs help young Houstonians explore the ecosystems and wildlife right in their own backyard.
Four main programs serve different ages and settings. Discovery Camp runs in summer at the two learning centers, offering nature hikes, animal programs, crafts, and games. Each child takes a short quiz at the start and end of the day so naturalists can track what they learned. The Traveling Naturalist Program brings a 45-minute live-animal presentation to your school or recreation center — you pick the topic. The Junior Naturalist Program meets twice a month after school during the school year, with games, booklets, puzzles, and crafts tied to a running theme. Polliwog Club targets early childhood learners through stories, songs, crafts, and hands-on animal time at libraries, daycares, and early childhood centers.
Start by checking which program fits your child's age, schedule, and setting. If you work at a school or rec center, the Traveling Naturalist and Junior Naturalist programs can come to you — no field trip bus needed. For summer, look into Discovery Camp if your family is connected to a recreation center in a low- to moderate-income neighborhood. Early childhood educators can explore Polliwog Club through library and daycare partnerships. You can also preview the animals and topics on the Precinct 1 YouTube channel before reaching out.
These programs connect naturally to Harris County parks, public libraries, and recreation centers across Precinct 1. If your family already visits Alexander Deussen or El Franco Lee parks, the learning centers there are a great next step. Teachers and after-school coordinators can pair these visits with classroom science and biology units.
