"Miller Outdoor Theatre is the largest always-free professional performing arts program in the United States. It draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each season and offers something for every age — daytime children's shows, evening concerts, cultural dance, classical music, and outdoor films. It's a rare chance to experience world-class entertainment without spending a dime."
Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park has been Houston's favorite free night out since 1923. Every show — from ballet and Shakespeare to jazz and family films — is completely free. No dress code, no ticket price, just great live entertainment under the Houston sky.
The theater sits on nearly eight acres inside Hermann Park and runs an eight-month season of professional shows. Programming includes classical music, jazz, ethnic music and dance, ballet, Shakespeare, musical theater, popular concerts, and films. Daytime shows are designed especially for children and begin at 11 a.m. Evening performances run under a large covered canopy with about 1,700 seats. The open hillside behind the canopy is always free to use with no ticket needed — just bring a blanket or lawn chair.
Arriving prepared makes the night easy. For hillside seating, just show up — no ticket required. Blankets go on the right side of the hill; lawn chairs go on the left. For a covered canopy seat at an evening show (movies excluded), free tickets become available online the day before the performance starting at 10 a.m., and at the box office on the west side of the theater one hour before showtime. Limit is four tickets per person age 16 and older. Tickets cannot be reserved by phone. Arrive at least 15 minutes early — unoccupied seats are released at the scheduled start of show. Pack a picnic, bring the family, and skip the glass containers (all glass is prohibited). Alcohol is welcome in non-glass containers. The on-site concession stand also sells refreshments, and buying there helps support the free programming. The theater is a no-smoking zone, as are all City of Houston parks.
Miller Outdoor Theatre is inside Hermann Park, which is also home to the Houston Zoo and sits in Houston's Museum District — neighbors include the Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Health Museum, and the Children's Museum. A single trip to the area can turn into a full day of exploration before an evening show.
