Every year on the first Tuesday in October, neighborhoods across Houston step outside for National Night Out (NNO) — a tradition that dates back to the 1980s. In 2025, NNO falls on Oct. 7. Communities like the Heights, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, and Independence Heights will host block parties, cookouts, and porch-light gatherings. Harris County Precinct 1 Constable's Office will send deputies to registered events, and Council Members Abbie Kamin and Mario Castillo will visit neighborhoods across their districts.
NNO events can be as simple as turning on your porch light and chatting with neighbors, or as lively as a full block party with food, music, and games. Registered neighborhoods in Precinct 1 — including West Houston Heights, Oak Forest, Candlelight Oaks Village, Oak Estates, Timber Grove Manor, and Independence Heights — can expect a visit from a Precinct 1 deputy. Council Member Mario Castillo has announced events at Montie Beach and Woodland Heights civic clubs, as well as at East Sunset Heights (1031 E. 24th St.). Council Member Abbie Kamin's office is collecting event details from neighbors across District C.
You can take part in a few easy ways. If your block doesn't have an event yet, you can start one — even a casual porch gathering counts. Register your event with Precinct 1 at pct1constable.net/nnoregform to request a deputy visit. If you're in District C, email districtc@houstontx.gov to share your event details with Council Member Kamin's office. Already registered? Spread the word to neighbors using flyers or a knock on the door so no one misses out.

Safer neighborhoods start with neighbors who know each other. National Night Out brings residents and law enforcement together in a low-key, friendly setting. That connection makes it easier to look out for one another all year long — not just one evening in October.
