About this program
Getting there
University of Houston campus and partner sites across Houston, including the Greater East End, Third Ward, Sunnyside, and New Hope Housing. Some courses and CEUs are also available virtually.
Neighbors trust neighbors. Community Health Workers bridge the gap between residents and a health care system that can feel distant or confusing. CHWI gives CHWs the training, credentials, and community they need to do that work well — and to get paid fairly for it.
CHWI has four main pieces. The Training Center offers the 160-hour certification course approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) — the course you need to become a certified CHW in Texas. Spanish-language continuing education hours are available too. The Continuing Education Units (CEUs) program offers in-person and virtual learning for working CHWs, CHW instructors, and other health professionals. The Responsive Trust Network (RTN) connects CHWs and public health professionals across multiple Houston neighborhoods to share knowledge and strengthen community health. Conferences bring the community together and offer additional CEU opportunities. A Registered Apprentice Program (RAP) is also coming soon.
