WHAT IS THIS? The Justice in the Sewers Campaign is Bayou City Waterkeeper's community organizing program that helps Houston residents fight for sewage repairs and environmental justice. This campaign uses interactive maps, community meetings, and advocacy training to tackle Houston's massive sewage overflow problems.
WHY DOES IT MATTER? Houston has over 6,000 miles of aging sewage pipes that regularly break and flood our neighborhoods with raw sewage. These overflows disproportionately affect communities of color and low-income areas like Fifth Ward, Kashmere Gardens, and East End. When sewage backs up into homes or floods streets, it creates serious health risks and destroys property. The campaign already won a major victory - securing $20 million in city funding specifically to help residents repair private sewer connections.
HOW DOES IT IMPACT ME? If you live in older Houston neighborhoods, your home might be connected to failing sewage infrastructure.
