Assistive Technology and Equipment Access

Houston Center for Independent Living

Staying Well
HCIL provides access to a range of assistive technology and durable medical equipment, from high-tech communication devices to practical adaptive tools. Available supports include hearing aids, walkers, wheelchairs, CPAP machines, and referrals for vehicle and home modifications. Our community grows stronger when we learn together and share knowledge across neighborhoods.
The Houston Center for Independent Living (HCIL) is part of the Coalition for Barrier Free Living, a Texas organization that has served people with disabilities for nearly fifty years. HCIL works to help people with disabilities live independently in their communities. HCIL provides several important services including information and referral, peer support, and independent living skills training. The organization helps people understand what resources are available to them. They also provide equipment like wheelchairs, walkers, and hearing aids through their Purchase Services Program. This helps remove barriers that might prevent someone from living on their own. The staff at HCIL also helps people understand how work might affect their benefits from Social Security. Through their Work Incentives Planning program, counselors give free advice to people with disabilities. This helps individuals make smart choices about their money and future. HCIL serves people of all ages who have disabilities. Whether someone needs help finding accessible housing, learning life skills, or understanding benefits, HCIL connects them to the support they need to live independently.
