Protect Democracy is a nonpartisan, cross-ideological nonprofit group founded in 2016 that works to prevent authoritarianism and strengthen American democracy. It operates through two sister organizations: Protect Democracy Project (a 501(c)(3) focused on public education, research, and litigation) and Protect Democracy United (a 501(c)(4) focused on advocacy and lobbying). The organization uses litigation, legislative strategy, communications, technology, and research to defend free and fair elections, the rule of law, and the right to dissent. It has filed over 100 lawsuits challenging authoritarian actions, built election-monitoring technology, and assembled a team of more than 120 experts spread across more than 20 states. While headquartered in Washington, DC, its staff works nationally — including in Texas — and its jobs are posted through a recruitee portal that may surface in Houston civic contexts.
