The Harris County Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement services to unincorporated Harris County — the areas outside Houston city limits and other incorporated municipalities. The Sheriff's Office operates the Harris County Jail, the nation's third largest jail system, and manages pretrial and post-conviction programs. The HCSO operates specialized units including the Domestic Violence unit, the Mental Health Diversion Unit which diverts individuals experiencing mental health crises from jail, and the Re-Entry Services Division which assists formerly incarcerated individuals with housing, employment, and benefits enrollment upon release.
