Raising Houston
Immigration Legal Help in Houston
By The Change Lab -- via manual_seed -- Apr 18, 2026
Overview
Houston has the third-largest immigrant population of any U.S. city. Our community includes hundreds of thousands of residents navigating the immigration system — from DACA renewals and family petitions to asylum claims and naturalization. Affordable, trustworthy legal help exists. The key is knowing where to go and avoiding scams.
Critical warning: Only licensed attorneys and DOJ-accredited representatives can legally provide immigration advice. "Notarios" and unlicensed consultants have scammed thousands of Houston families. If someone who is not a lawyer offers to help with your immigration case, walk away.

The Framework
Key Ideas
Free and low-cost immigration legal services in Houston:
- YMCA International Services — largest provider in Houston. Asylum, family petitions, naturalization, DACA, VAWA, T/U visas. Low-cost (sliding scale). Call 713-339-9015.
- Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) — free. Serves low-income immigrants. Bilingual. Call 888-988-9996.
- Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services — low-cost. Family petitions, naturalization, DACA renewals. Call 713-874-6570.
- Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative (HILSC) — coordinates free legal clinics across the city. Check houstonimmigration.org for upcoming clinic dates.
- Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center — pro bono representation for asylum seekers and detained individuals.
Know your rights:
- You have the right to remain silent if approached by ICE.
- ICE cannot enter your home without a federal judicial warrant signed by a judge. An ICE administrative warrant (Form I-200) does NOT authorize entry.
- You have the right to an attorney in immigration proceedings, but the government does not provide one for free — you must find your own.
- You can request a bond hearing if detained.

Put It Into Practice
Practice
If you need immigration legal help:
- Call YMCA International Services at 713-339-9015 — they handle most case types and can refer you if needed.
- Or call HILSC at 713-955-0004 to find the next free legal clinic near you.
- Bring to any consultation: passport, any immigration documents you have (I-94, work permits, prior applications), ID, and a timeline of your immigration history.
If ICE comes to your door:
- Do not open the door.
- Ask: "Do you have a warrant signed by a judge?" Ask them to slide it under the door.
- If they do not have a judicial warrant, you do not have to open the door. Say: "I do not consent to entry."
- Do not sign anything.
- Call your attorney or an immigration hotline immediately.
Avoid fraud:
- Never pay a "notario" for immigration help — this is a common scam in Houston.
- Verify any attorney at texasbar.com.
- Report immigration fraud to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
