Texas Law Lets Pharmacists Give Ivermectin Without Doctor Orders
Starting December 2025, Texas pharmacists can dispense ivermectin without a prescription if they follow state rules.
By Texas Legislature -- Apr 12, 2026
Overview
Texas passed House Bill 25, a new law that changes how people can get ivermectin. The law lets pharmacists give this medicine to people without requiring a doctor's prescription. This takes effect on December 4, 2025.
Pharmacists can now dispense ivermectin if they follow written rules and procedures set by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. When dispensing the medicine, pharmacists must provide clear instructions on how to use ivermectin properly. This ensures that people understand the medication and can use it safely.
The law protects pharmacists who act carefully and follow the established rules. They will not face criminal charges, civil lawsuits, or professional discipline for dispensing ivermectin according to this new policy. This protection encourages pharmacists to help their communities access this medicine more easily.
The Texas Legislature voted to approve this bill with strong support. The House passed it with 87 votes in favor and 47 against on August 27, 2025. The Senate passed it with 20 votes in favor and 6 against on the same day. The Governor approved the bill, making it official state law.
This change gives our community another way to access medicine through neighborhood pharmacies. Pharmacists can now play a larger role in helping people get the care they need quickly and conveniently.
