Every March 31, our community has a chance to celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility. This day honors the strength and joy of transgender people while fighting for a safer future for all.
Rachel Crandall-Crocker started this day in 2009. She wanted to create a positive celebration after years of focusing only on loss and grief. In 2021, President Biden became the first U.S. president to officially recognize this day.
Right now, transgender people face serious challenges across our country. Lawmakers are trying to pass 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in state governments. Black and Brown transgender women continue to face violence. Suicide attempts among transgender youth have gone up during this difficult time.
We can support our transgender neighbors in many ways. Reading books by transgender writers helps us learn their stories. Watching documentaries like "Disclosure" on Netflix teaches us about their experiences. Listening to podcasts such as "Gender Reveal" brings their voices into our daily lives.
Taking action makes a real difference too. We can donate to groups like the Transgender Law Center or Trans Lifeline. Local organizations like Baltimore Safe Haven and Brave Space Alliance need our support. Helping transgender people pay for gender-affirming care through mutual aid funds changes lives.
Our community grows stronger when we stand together. This Transgender Day of Visibility, we can learn, donate, and take action to create a more welcoming Houston for all our neighbors.
