Houston's Homeless Court helps people experiencing homelessness clear legal barriers and access services instead of facing jail time.
Houston's Homeless Court is a specialized court program run by the Coalition for the Homeless that helps people experiencing homelessness resolve legal issues that keep them stuck in cycles of poverty. This court understands that people without housing face unique challenges when dealing with tickets, fines, and minor legal problems. The court provides a more understanding environment where people can clear warrants, reduce fines, and access services instead of facing jail time.
Scot More, who experienced homelessness himself after being kicked out of his family home, now advocates for others in similar situations. His personal story shows how quickly anyone can lose housing and how legal problems can make it harder to get back on their feet. For Houston residents, this court matters because it helps our neighbors move from the streets into stable housing by removing legal barriers.
They can explain how the Homeless Court works and help schedule a court date that focuses on solutions rather than punishment.
When people can resolve their legal issues, they can qualify for jobs, housing, and services. The court also connects people to mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and job training. If you or someone you know needs help with legal issues while experiencing homelessness, contact the Coalition for the Homeless.
