This law protects you whether you're buying, renting, getting a mortgage, or seeking housing help. Houston Habitat for Humanity actively supports these protections by providing equal access to safe, affordable housing for all Houstonians.
This matters because housing discrimination still happens. Some people get turned away from apartments, charged higher rent, or denied mortgages because of who they are. The Fair Housing Act gives you legal protection and creates consequences for those who discriminate.
In Houston, this law helps ensure our diverse community has equal housing opportunities across all neighborhoods. Two federal agencies enforce this law. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) handles individual complaints, while the Department of Justice tackles bigger patterns of discrimination.
