Overview
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, Houston has a wide network of crisis services, counseling centers, and support programs — many of them free or low-cost. You do not need insurance. You do not need a referral. You just need to reach out.

Ongoing counseling and therapy:
- The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD — the public mental health authority for Harris County. 80+ service sites. Serves adults and children regardless of insurance. Sliding-fee scale. Offers individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric medication management, and substance abuse treatment.
- Legacy Community Health — behavioral health integrated into primary care at 40+ locations. Can see a therapist and a doctor in one visit.
- Jewish Family Service (JFS) — open to everyone regardless of faith. Counseling, psychiatric services, support groups. Sliding-fee scale. Multiple locations.
- The Montrose Center — LGBTQ+-affirming mental health services. Individual and group therapy, support groups, anti-violence program.
- DePelchin Children's Center — children and family therapy, foster care support, school-based counseling.
Substance use: The Harris Center, Santa Maria Hostel, Council on Recovery, and ADAPT all offer substance abuse treatment — from outpatient counseling to residential treatment. Most have sliding-fee scales or accept Medicaid.

- If you have Medicaid or no insurance, The Harris Center and Legacy Community Health are your best starting points — both accept walk-ins for initial assessments.

- Talk to your child's school counselor — they can refer to school-based therapy programs.
