Overview
Beyond the Bayous is Houston's bold plan to create new parks and trails that connect our communities. This initiative builds green spaces along railway lines, utility easements, and major roads to create north-south corridors across Greater Houston. The goal is simple: every neighborhood should have access to safe, healthy outdoor spaces within walking or biking distance. Right now, many Houston communities lack nearby parks. This creates health problems and limits where families can safely play and exercise. Beyond the Bayous fixes this by using existing infrastructure to build new green connections. These aren't just empty lots with grass. We're talking about walking trails, bike paths, community gardens, and pocket parks that bring neighbors together. The project focuses on areas that need parks most, especially communities that have been overlooked in past city planning. When complete, these green corridors will connect existing parks like a network, making it easier to walk or bike across Houston safely. You can support this work by attending Houston Parks Board meetings, volunteering for community input sessions, or joining local advocacy groups. Contact the Houston Parks and Recreation Department to learn about upcoming planning meetings in your area. Your voice helps shape where these new parks go.
