Overview
Mandarin Immersion Magnet School is a Houston ISD public school that teaches students to speak, read, and write in both English and Mandarin Chinese from Pre-K through 8th grade. Located at 5445 West Alabama in the River Oaks area, this magnet school serves 739 students with specialized dual-language instruction. Students learn core subjects like math, science, and social studies in both languages, preparing them for our global economy. This matters because bilingual students often earn higher wages and have more job opportunities. Houston's growing international business community values employees who speak Mandarin, especially in energy, technology, and trade sectors. Our city connects directly to Asia through the Port of Houston and Bush Intercontinental Airport. Students who graduate from this program gain valuable skills for college and careers. The school provides all the benefits of Houston ISD education: free meals, transportation, extracurricular activities, and support services. Families throughout Houston can apply during the magnet school application period, typically in the fall. Students don't need to speak Mandarin to start - they learn together.
