"Undercurrents" is an interactive art installation at Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern that turns your voice into light and connects you with Houston poets. Created by international artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, this installation lets visitors record voice messages at kiosks around the underground space. Each recording creates a colorful LED light path through the cistern's historic columns. The installation responds with related messages from other visitors or poetry readings from five Houston poets: Nick Flynn, Aris Kian, Martha Serpas, Jennifer Teets, and Roberto Tejada. This art experience matters because it celebrates our local literary voices while creating connections between strangers through shared stories. The 17-second echo in the cistern adds natural drama to every recording. For Houston families, this offers a unique way to explore art, technology, and our city's creative community in one visit. The historic cistern itself tells Houston's water infrastructure story, making this both an artistic and educational experience. You can visit Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through January 24, 2027. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, military members, and students.
