WHAT IS THIS? Undercurrents is an interactive voice-powered art installation by Mexican-Canadian electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer at the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern. Visitors record voice messages at kiosks around the underground space. Each recording creates illuminated light paths between the cistern's historic pillars and triggers responses from past visitors or Houston poets. WHY DOES IT MATTER? This installation transforms Houston's historic infrastructure into a living community conversation. It celebrates our city's poets and connects strangers through shared stories and experiences. The 17-second natural echo in this former water reservoir creates a unique acoustic environment that amplifies voices and builds community connections through art and technology. HOW DOES IT IMPACT ME? Located in Buffalo Bayou Park near downtown Houston, this installation makes art accessible to all ages and backgrounds. Local poets Nick Flynn, Aris Kian, Martha Serpas, Jennifer Teets, and Roberto Tejada are featured in the collection. Their voices about nature, love, and belonging reflect Houston's diverse creative community. The experience grows richer as more Houstonians participate, creating a digital time capsule of our city's voices. HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? Visit Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through January 24, 2027. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, military members, and students.
